Robin Sinke

Ecological experience designer, researcher and educator

Making ecological relationships perceptible.

Through sensory, spatial and interactive experiences.

About

I design against the idea that humans are the centre of everything.

My work explores how design can shift the relationship between people, the city and more-than-human nature: not by adding more data, policy or smart solutions, but by letting people feel again that they are part of a living world.

My practice is critical, sensory and relational. I make installations, methods and learning environments that question who counts, who is heard, and which kinds of knowledge disappear when we only measure what is visible, efficient or human.

How I work

This is how I work: ECOS, from oikos, the Greek word for home. Four steps that start in the body and lead back to ecological connectedness.

  1. 01

    Embody

Everything starts in the body. Senses, movement and presence come first, before anything is interpreted.

  2. 02

    Connect

Attention goes to relationships: how people, places, materials and more-than-human life connect.

  3. 03

    Open

Through design, insights become experiences that others can feel, opening up new ways of thinking.

  4. 04

    Stay

The focus shifts to what lingers: what remains with people long after the experience is over.

What I’m currently working on

Pause & Play

An interactive soundscape installation where participants compose their own urban sound environment. By mixing traffic, birds, wind, water and human activity, they experience how sound shapes our sense of place, and how a city is a network of human and more-than-human relations.

Exhibited at Exposure, HKU · Dutch Design Week
